Bachelor Degree in Mathematics

Description

The Bachelor Degree programme in Mathematics is generally completed within 6 semesters, in which students receive a well-rounded training in mathematics. Due to several alternatives students can choose their focus within the areas of applied as well as pure mathematics according to the research areas of the Department of Mathematics. Besides the major subject of mathematics students are required to take a second subject, a minor. At the end of the first semester there is a preliminary examination called the GOP (Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung). Within the Bachelor programme 180 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) points have to be collected, 150 points for the major and 30 points for the minor subject. This is accomplished by passing the exams of the individual courses. A Bachelor thesis is also required and counts towards the final result. Each course can be repeated any number of times except the GOP.
During summer break the Department of Mathematics offers a bridging course for new students, which is meant to facilitate the transition from school mathematics to academic mathematics studies.

There will be an orientation phase for new students of Mathematics.

Requirements

The student should have strong interest in mathematics. Structural thinking and working is essential for successful studies. In contrast to school mathematics mathematical studies require a high ability of abstraction. An understanding of the logical structures of mathematics is also necessary, especially proof techniques.
