Bachelor Degree in Business Mathematics

Why study Business Mathematics at LMU Munich?

Compared to many other degree programmes in business mathematics, for example at polytechnics, the programme at LMU Munich places emphasis on a good mathematical foundation. The mathematical education is equivalent to that of the Bachelor Degree programme in Mathematics. Therefore, the Business Mathematics programme is aimed at students, who would consider mathematical studies and are also interested in economics.
The job opportunities for graduates of this bachelor degree are excellent: finance and insurance industry, banking institutions, business consultancy. There is great demand for highly qualified and interdisciplinary skilled specialists with profound knowledge of mathematics, statistics and economics.

Description

The Bachelor Degree programme in Business Mathematics provides fundamental skills and techniques for analysing and solving mathematical problems occurring in financial and insurance mathematics. It comprises lectures in financial and insurance mathematics, economic sciences and statistics. Students also solve mathematical problems in computer-assisted classes.
The degree programme is generally completed within 6 semesters, in which students receive a well-rounded training in business mathematics. The programme consists of 22 compulsory and at least 5 further courses. The studies are completed by a Bachelor thesis. The introductory lectures are shared with the Bachelor Degree in Mathematics. At the end of the first semester there is a preliminary examination called the GOP (Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung). Within the Bachelor programme 180 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) points have to be achieved. This is accomplished by passing the exams of the individual courses. The Bachelor thesis also counts towards the final result.

There will be an orientation phase for new students of Business Mathematics.

Requirements

Students intending to study Business Mathematics should have strong interest in mathematics. Structural thinking and working is essential for successful studies. In contrast to school mathematics mathematical studies require a high ability of abstraction. An understanding of the logical structures of mathematics is also necessary, especially proof techniques.

Pre-Registration Procedure

The Bachelor programme in Business Mathematics only starts in winter term. You are required to send in a written application stating who you are and why you would like to study business mathematics (no more than a page).

Shortly after the 15th July you will receive an enrolment letter. This is needed for registering in the degree programme.
